The utopian dream of total openness

The Canadian Globe and Mail posted an article yesterday reaching back to the political philosophies of Jeremy Bentham(Just watch us: The utopian dream of total openness – The Globe and Mail) and his ideas on total transparency regulating modern society. This is a cornerstone of Integrationalism and its efforts to recognize the human value proposition as being independent of any spiritual or divine entity’s regulation or advisory.

Transparency is quite the fascinating subject for me because of our actual potential to achieve it. During Jeremy Bentham’s live (1748-1832) transparency was regarded as a utopian point of view. But I think it necessary to establish what a utopian point of view actually is. While Utopia is referencesd at involving idealized perfection by, utopian (emphasis on the lower-case ‘u’) as an adjective that references “impractical or unrealistic schemes of such perfection”.

This was the case in the mid nineteenth century, but in the modern world of  ontological IT (information technology) and cloud communication in and web 2.0 atmosphere, yield the potential for widespread transparency, even an actual democracy with digital engagement.

Of course modern society possesses some relic ideals and traditions regarding economic status, gender, ethnicity, sexual preference, geographic location, etc…. and total transparency would embarrass and condemn individuals seeking access to groups of prestige and legacy…ultimately looking to become what they loath, idolizing the very detriment of all society: protectionism (a lack of transparency).

The notion that there is anything to be protected for “security” purposes is dangerous. I’m not naive to the fact that every nation doesn’t share the ability to tolerate points of view as relatively radical as transparency, and that they are far removed from the possibility of being able to share a transparent and cooperative existence if ensued tomorrow, but the rhetoric needs to start today (and on more fronts that the US Presidential campaign trail). Further, if the technological elite societies of modern day adopt a transparency strategy, the recognizable oppression that lesser technologically astute nations endure will decrease significantly as a result. It is widely known by psychologists that humans in their infancy are compassionate beings looking for physical connections of sorts for their very survival; and by sociologists, that the socializes realities of institutionally scarce resources of sorts is what drives the adverse economic transaction that we identify as brutal “huma nature” (termed and defined by a more primitive and yet wise ancestor).
